Today, Grade 1s had the opportunity to experience how school life was in the recent past. We did a short simulation of classroom and learning in the recent past.
The students came to school wearing semi-formal attire, with hair neatly tied or brushed. They sat in rows and had to be extremely quiet the entire time.
They were so relieved after as they could be free to act as themselves. It was a nice experience.
The following were there reflectioon about the experience:
" I was scared because the teacher was so strict. She had a stick."
" I was afraid that I will get punished by the teacher."
" The teacher spoke in a strong firm voice. I was afraid to make noise."
" I was lsitening the whole time. I had to sit really nicely."
We discussed the possible causes why the classroom environment was like that. One of the children mentioned that the teacher needed to be strict so everyone will be quiet. No one would disturb the others from their learning. Another one mentioned about having 100-300 students in one class. That is a factor why teachers needed to be strict.
Still they said, they love school at present and wouldn't want to go back to the old school setting.
