Taking Action about Food Waste

As we ended the unit, Grade 1s reflected on their unit journey about FOODS from the FARM to our TABLE. We looked at the facts we got from this unit, and connected that to different practices to ensure that learning is meaningful. Then we asked ourselves the SO WHAT NOW? After learning about foods and the processes they need to undergo to become edible, What is the next step? Introducing the Sustainable Development Goals or SDG's created by UNICEF, Grade 1s checked which goal/s is/are connected to our unit. They pointed out two: Hunger and Responsible Production and Consumption. They are correct. We now focused on the problem of FOOD WASTE. We investigated on the possible effects of it by asking the 'what's next' question.
The Grade 1s also investigated on the consumption situation of the students at DSKI by checking their lunch. They gathered data finding out how many students in each class completely finish their lunch and how many do not. This is what they found out.
They were asked to reflect about it and make a decision. They looked at the data and came up with a conclusion that this is a problem. So they also came up with possible solutions.
One group decided to make a simple poster encouraging the students to finish their lunch by telling them the effects of food waste. One decided to make a drawing and share it to the younger kids as a colouring paper for the kids, one group made a simple video and the other group decided to make an announcement for the school to hear.
