Early this week, our Grade 1 students worked in pairs to explore picture prompts showing different symbiotic relationships. Using the visible thinking routine “I see, I think, I wonder,” they moved around the room, observed each image carefully, and recorded their thinking. This routine is designed to help students make careful observations, share interpretations, and generate questions that support inquiry.
As the students discussed the pictures, they noticed details, made connections, and wondered about how living things interact with one another. Their responses gave us a valuable glimpse into their thinking and helped surface questions that will guide our finding out stage of inquiry. See-Think-Wonder is especially useful because it helps students develop curiosity and turn observations into questions for further learning.
Their thinking showed that they are beginning to notice that living things can depend on each other in different ways. These wonderings will help us plan our next steps as we investigate symbiosis more deeply in a way that is age-appropriate and hands-on for young learners.
