This week, Grade 1 students explored simple machines and complex machines. They learned the meaning of these terms and discovered how simple machines and forces work together to make tasks easier. Simple machines have few or no moving parts, while complex machines are made by combining more than one simple machine.
Students also looked closely at familiar objects from the classroom and home to identify the simple machines inside them. They practiced noticing how everyday tools are built from the basic machines they have been learning about, such as levers, wheels and axles, pulleys, inclined planes, screws, and wedges.
To end the week, Grade 1s worked in pairs using a Venn diagram to sort pictures into two groups: simple machines and complex machines. This activity helped them explain what each type of machine is and compare the similarities they share, such as helping people do work more easily.
Next week, the class will wrap up the unit by making connections between their learning and the machines they use at home. They will think about how different households benefit from these machines and share ideas for how these tools could be improved or innovated in the future.
